WHO WE ARE
Benjamin Renaud
Greetings! I’m Benjamin!
I’ve always been curious and energetic about whatever I’m doing, and if there’s an animal I identify with, it’s probably a squirrel.
I grew up in Colorado Springs at the base of the towering Rocky Mountains, where skiing, snowboarding, hiking, mountain biking, camping, whitewater rafting, cliff jumping, and adventure were simply part of growing up.
With Utah next door, Moab became a second backyard. Days spent scrambling on rocks and nights around a riverside campfire—along with writers like Edward Abbey—deepened my love for wild places and the importance of protecting them.
I attended outdoor leadership school in Leadville, Colorado, where I learned solo camping, wilderness medicine, and how to plan adventures thoughtfully. I’ve always felt drawn to wild places, and so has Lynn. When we met, we went skydiving on our first date! Since then, we’ve traveled to many countries, started an organic food farm, worked in event production, and had a damn good time doing every last bit of it. These days, we love kayaking the Russian River at Jenner, hiking the beautiful trails around Sonoma County, or heading out to the coast. I also head into the wilderness every year for a men’s backpacking trip filled with the natural world, granite, running water, dear friends, and connection.
For me, nature is necessary. It connects us to the living world around us and reminds us that we’re part of something much bigger.
And there is still so much of this wild world I want to see. Lynn and I recently spent 80 days traveling through Morocco, Spain, France, Italy, Greece, and Portugal. We travel exceptionally well together.
Now we’re taking on our next adventure: building Happy Trails Bazaar!
We’re incredibly excited to create a place that makes getting outside a little easier, and more affordable. I look forward to meeting you down at our shop.
Until then…Happy Trails!
Lynn Mcfarlane
Howdy! I’m Lynn!
I grew up in the north of England, and in my youth, spent many happy times camping and hiking mainly in Scotland, the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales, and North Wales. Occasionally it would snow, and often there would be rain in any one of its myriad forms, but the glorious countryside more than made up for these small bothers. And when the sun was out, it was marvelous.
In my twenties, I travelled extensively in Europe and particularly enjoyed the warmer climate of the Mediterranean. My love for the outdoors and travel, eventually led to a career of crewing and cooking on sail boats in the Mediterranean, Caribbean, USA, and even the Great Barrier Reef. For a time, I worked on a catamaran out of Cairns, where I could snorkel or scuba dive at Michaelmas Cay every day! And in between nautical adventures, I would sometimes go backpacking inland or wherever I happened to be.
I crewed on and managed the 103-foot square-rigged topsail ketch “Hawaiian Chieftain” in Sausalito for many years. We operated 4th and 5th grade educational programs in the Bay Area and beyond, along with Sunset Sails.
Ben and I met 20 years ago whilst working on Harmony Festival here in Sonoma County. There we discovered our love of creating and building things together, and we’ve never stopped. With our mutual love of the outdoors and traveling far afield, we are bringing it all together under one roof at Happy Trails Bazaar - for everyone to find and enjoy what ever they need to get going.
